This week I wanted to share a friend's rehab journey after she had a plate put in her lower leg from a fracture while climbing. She is a good example of how function can be taken to the next level when taught the right self care techniques to work on in between physical therapy sessions.
My hope is that if you are struggling with recovery, or know someone who is, you will challenge your rehab team to give you more to do.They may say you’re not ready, which could be true, but they also may give you more!
Two months after the surgery my friend’s ankle was healing really well. The bone was healed. The soft tissue was still healing so she was in a boot and using a crutch to ease back into walking.
She was feeling pretty frustrated with the slow return to function, which is common during that phase of just waiting for the bone to heal. The day I saw her was the day her surgeon said the bone was healed, so I started to assess her joint movement and try out some treatment. Whatever helped, I taught her how to work on it herself via certain exercises.
***Click the image below for self-care exercises. Please check with your rehab team prior to doing these if you’re post op to make sure they are appropriate for you.
After just one session of getting her joints to move better she had:
More confidence in her leg
Better range of motion of her foot, ankle and toes
Better muscle activation
I’d call that success! Everyone’s rehab journey is different, but I just hope wherever you are, you please challenge us [aka your rehab team] with questions!
